Parts of the Plot of the Film
Exposition
In the year 2004, Fidel Lansangan and Stella Puno were freshmen of BA Psychology at the Pampanga Agricultural College. Fidel has a speech defect but that didn’t hinder his love for words. In fact, he pursued writing poetry often. Stella was an aspiring but frustrated rock star that has troubles making decisions in her life and acts more on impulse.
Rising Action
Stella and Fidel became friends at a college party. With time, they found each other’s company comforting and hung out often. He then found himself falling for Stella. Fidel contemplated when and how to tell her his feelings. Fidel started to write poems for Stella expressing his admiration for her.
Climax
A hundred poems later, Fidel finally gave a piece of his heart, which took form in words, to Stella.
Falling Action
Luck wasn’t on Fidel’s side. It was all too late when he confessed. Stella already has someone in her heart who showed her love at the right time. She was confused as to why Fidel didn’t say anything all this time. All she needed to hear were 3 words from him.
Denouement
Stella ended up marrying another man. Meanwhile, Fidel met a new girl that finally gave his poems a happy ending.
Why did you like the film? In what aspect?
I found that most people like viewing films that are lighthearted but this film didn’t run down the same path and that’s its edge—that drew me in. Just like Fidel fell for Stella, I fell in love with the complexity of the film that seemed to hide behind a familiar concept. I mean, how many films about typical college romance have been released in the past? It certainly covered a familiar ground that is relatable to the majority of the audience, but the angle it took to tell a bittersweet “fairy tale” is really creative in perspective and something worth praising for.
You could already see from the beginning that the film had a hint of intricacy within. One obvious evidence of this was the characters. The character of Fidel resonates with me because I also have a soft spot for poetry. We have the same central topic for all our literary pieces—love. I can’t help but notice how he perceived Stella as a perfect being, capable of all these extraordinary things in his poems, but how she was portrayed in the film was the complete opposite of that. This made me realize something. We still appear worthy of love through someone’s eyes even if we are unlovable to ourselves.
In the film, Fidel loved Stella when she couldn’t love herself. There was one part of the film that could summarize this (also my favorite part). It was a montage of complete juxtaposition. Shown in it was where Stella’s impulsive decisions had taken her. We could see her suffering from a mental breakdown, threatening to end her life. Simultaneously, we can hear Fidel in the background, reciting the poems he made for Stella. Fidel said all the good things he saw in her that she couldn’t. She was a mess but through his eyes, such goddess couldn’t be flawed at all. One of my favorite lines was from Fidel’s Poem #80, “She is a miracle, that much is clear.”
In conclusion, I could say that this film latched onto me in a deeper sense. It’s definitely something I would want to watch again. My thoughts were flooded with ideas I picked up from this film that it left me thinking for days. The film proved to me that even in the darkest places, love can bloom and shine brightly. If life was a movie then loving is the best part.
